The intense weather forced the relocation of around 350,000 people, delivering heavy downpours and destructive gusts, particularly between Guangdong's Wuchuan and Hainan's Wenchang. Ferry services were suspended and air travel disrupted at Haikou Meilan airport. Storm Details Matmo, this year's 21st cyclone of 2025, had sustained wind speeds of 151km/h and poured more than 50mm of rainfall in a short period in Qinzhou and Chongzou. Urban areas of Nanning also experienced significant rain amounts. Matmo prompted China's highest-level red alert, with disturbances in Zhanjiang, where businesses, transport links and roads were closed. In the special administrative region, numerous air services were impacted and 30 cancelled. Forecast and Movement As Matmo moves inland towards Cao Bang province in the neighboring country, it is projected to diminish into a tropical depression with 55mph winds but will continue to bring heavy rainfall. Northern Vietnam could experience significant rainfall on Monday, raising the threat of inundation and mudslides. The weather pattern is anticipated to move towards Yunnan province in China, where further heavy rainfall is likely. Other Storm Systems Meanwhile, Hurricane Priscilla developed off the Pacific shoreline of Mexico on the weekend, initially as a storm system. It led to a weather alert for south-western regions from a coastal point to Punta Mita on Monday. In the early hours of the next day, the hurricane was about 491 kilometers from a Mexican cape with sustained winds of 65mph. It intensified into a severe cyclone in the night, when wind speeds peaked at 121km/h. Although unlikely to make landfall, the storm is likely to generate dangerous waves and strong currents as it tracks northwestward along the coast towards Baja California Sur. Substantial rain is forecast on Monday, amounting to 100-150mm in Michoacán and western Guerrero, with local totals at about 20 centimeters. Colima and western Jalisco could receive moderate to heavy rain. In other parts, Cyclone Shakhti has formed as the initial post-season cyclonic storm of 2025 in the Arabian Sea, causing an alert from the national weather agency for an Indian state. On that day, Shakhti was 209 kilometers southeast of a location in Oman with maximum sustained winds of 64mph. Shakhti, which has moved in a southwestern direction and lost strength, is predicted to turn eastward into the the sea. Rough seas are expected to persist along the coastal stretch and intense rain is expected in coastal districts including specific Indian cities.
